Frederick "Fred" Buckenmeyer Obituary

Fred J. Buckenmeyer was born in Everson, WA on June 15, 1932. He passed away on January 27, 2025 at the age of 92. Fred was the oldest of 6 children; Robert, James, (Donald) Ray, Peggy, Phyllis. He grew up on the family farm in Northern Whatcom County on the Canadian Border. His Grandfather homesteaded the property in the late 1800's. His childhood was spent farming (with draft horses) growing crops and raising livestock for use by his family. He left school after the 8th grade to help on the farm. He was very proud of his service in the Korean war from October 1952 to October 1954. He was part of the motor pool. If you have ever heard him say "play er cool in the motor pool" now you know where that came from. He was sort of the Radar O'Riley of the unit, often trading supplies for "hard to acquire beer" to keep his unit supplied. Upon his return from the Army he spent some time logging until an accident severely injured his hand. He spent 45 years working for the WA DOT, eventually working his way up to Lead Tech. His job was to keep the Mt Baker Highway open between Nugents Corner and the Mt Baker Ski Area. Driving snowplow, containing flood waters and patching pot holes. After his retirement in 1985 he spent 5 years working at the Clausen quarry near Silver Lake. He married Marilyn Pomeroy in 1955. In 1976 he married Midge Varang and they had 44 years together. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Orabelle Buckenmeyer, his brother Robert (Bob), his first wife Marilyn and his second wife Midge (Mildred). He is survived by his siblings Ray (wife Carol), Jim (wife Dawn), Phyllis and Peggy. His children, Fred (wife Darcy), Dianna (husband Bob), Camille and Karen. Step sons Gary (Darlene) and Larry. Grandchildren, Nicole Fisher (Gene), Jacob Buckenmeyer (Adorae) Sarah Lusier (Lucas), Robert Gay (Heather), Sam Gay (Sarah), Janna Gay (John), Justin Burner, Carissa Shaffer (Brandon), Molly Ashcroft (Weston), Cory Kehoe, Jessica Kehoe (Michael), Dean Varang, Fred Varang (Toni), Lacey Delange (Marty), Christina Whitney (Brodie). Numerous Great-Grandchildren. Following the Graveside service there will be a memorial reception at St. Peters Parish Hall, 6210 Mt. Baker Hwy, Deming, WA 98244, all are welcome!

Fred will be missed at Bourbons. He was the only one I could talk to that knew the old loggers in Whatcom County. A great gentleman that enjoyed a good joke. May He Rest In Peace
